How to use AI for your resume without inventing experience
Give AI a verified record of your experience and ask it to improve wording, order and relevance within those facts. Do not let it fill gaps with plausible details. Check every title, tool, responsibility and result against the original record before submitting, including in an English or Chinese translation.
1. Define the difference between rewriting and inventing
A rewrite can shorten a sentence, use a clearer verb or move a relevant task earlier. It must preserve what you did, where you did it and how much responsibility you had. Changing “supported” to “led”, adding an unfamiliar tool or supplying an unrecorded percentage changes the claim itself.

2. Compare a persuasive claim with a defensible one
Fictional example: an applicant helped a student society run an event. Their notes say they maintained the registration spreadsheet, answered attendee emails and sent unresolved questions to the organiser. The notes contain no attendance growth figures, budget responsibility or team-management duties.

“Led a cross-functional events team and increased attendance by 40% through a streamlined registration strategy.”
Defensible rewrite from the same facts
“Maintained the student event registration spreadsheet, answered attendee emails and escalated unresolved questions to the organiser.”
The second version makes the contribution visible without inventing leadership or a measured result. It belongs under the student activity, not under an employer where the applicant never did that work. Even a true achievement becomes misleading when attached to the wrong role, organisation or date.
3. Start with a prompt that sets factual boundaries
Replace the placeholders with your reviewed facts and the actual job description. Keep the source facts available beside the draft. A prompt can guide the rewrite, but it does not remove the need to check the output.
Rewrite my resume for [JOB DESCRIPTION] using only [VERIFIED PROFILE FACTS]. Write in [LANGUAGE] and keep the tone clear and professional.
Preserve employers, titles, dates, qualifications, tools, responsibility levels and results. Do not invent metrics, clients, certifications or experience. Keep each achievement attached to the role or project where it happened.
Use the job description to choose relevant facts, not as evidence about me. If a requirement has no supporting fact, list it separately as a gap. Ask for clarification instead of filling missing details.
Return the revised bullets and, for each one, the original fact used. Flag wording that would require me to verify something before using it.
4. Review every factual claim
- Identity and dates: check company names, job titles, education and employment periods against your records.
- Ownership: distinguish your work from a team result. Keep “helped”, “supported” or “contributed” where those describe your role.
- Tools and skills: include only what you actually used or can substantiate. A tool named in the vacancy is not automatically your skill.
- Numbers and outcomes: verify the source, time period and your contribution for every metric. Remove figures you cannot support.
- Context: keep coursework, volunteering and personal projects accurately labelled. Do not present them as paid employment or client work.
- Translation: compare the meaning across English and Chinese. A more senior title or stronger proficiency level needs factual support.
5. Handle missing evidence directly
If you remember doing the work but your notes are incomplete, pause and reconstruct the details from records you are entitled to use. If you cannot verify an outcome, describe the task and deliverable you can verify. Keep a learning goal separate from a skill already acquired. A gap is information for planning your next step.
6. Review the profile as well as the generated resume
